An Island Guide to the Galapagos

An Island Guide to the Galapagos

The Galapagos Islands have long been a magnet to travellers interested in the ecology and geology of our natural world. This remote volcanic archipelago in the Pacific Ocean lies around 1,000km off the coast of Ecuador and supports some of the most diverse habitats on the planet. There are 13 main islands and numerous smaller ones, each with its own distinct characteristics. For anyone planning a trip to the Galapagos, holidays to explore this most unique part of the world can be enhanced by understanding some of the features and fast facts about them.
Bartholomew

While it is certainly not the largest, Bartholomew may be the most recognisable island. Its scenery is dominated by Pinnacle Rock, one of the most iconic landmarks of the archipelago. The tall, pointed rock just off the shore features in countless images of the region, providing a spectacular backdrop for the 360° views its high point. Bartholomew is also renowned as one of the best sites to encounter the magnificent marine wildlife, including Galapagos Penguins, sea lions, sharks and rays.

Espanola

Also known as Hood Island, Espanola is relatively flat, with the highest of its small hills measuring around 675ft. It is home to an abundance of wildlife including large numbers of sea lions and more than 12,000 pairs of Waved Albatross – almost the entire global population of the avian species. The breeding site at Gardner Bay, on its eastern shores, is also an exceptional place to explore the underwater life and encounter Marine Iguanas sunning themselves on the rocky beaches.

Isabela

The largest of all the islands, Isabela is in fact five small volcanoes joined together – all of which are still active. As such, the landscape is quite dramatic and varied, from the dense vegetation of the southern highlands to stark lava fields and mangrove swamps at lower altitudes. For visitors on Galapagos holidays, Isabela has multiple sites of interest including the vast wetlands, which support a huge variety of endemic and breeding birdlife.

Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz has six different vegetation zones, and the astounding diversity of its habitat is matched by the diversity and abundance of its wildlife species. Along with the opportunity to explore the many wild reptilian species of the highlands, it an integral part of the itinerary of most Galapagos holidays as it is the location of the Charles Darwin Research Station. The facility is an important breeding, education and research facility dedicated to the conservation of the Giant Tortoise, one of the most iconic species of the archipelago.

Fernandina

Fernandina is the youngest of all the islands, with its last volcanic activity recorded in 2009 from its centrepiece, La Cumbre. Renowned for its magnificent scenery, it is considered one of the world’s most untouched ecosystems, with no foreign species ever believed to have arrived on its shores. It is home to the nesting site of the unique flightless cormorants, along with the Blue Footed Booby and the elusive Galapagos Hawk.

A Unique Environment

The best Galapagos holidays are those with an itinerary that takes in both the large and smaller islands of the archipelago, in order to get a complete overview of not just its beauty but also its astonishing diversity. As one of the most fascinating places on Earth, scientists and biologists are still discovering new facts every year about this unique part of the world.

How Robots Change the Cleaning Industry

How Robots Change the Cleaning Industry

Remember how far the future looks like a child? You may have been daydreaming about cars driving cars and auto homes.

While some are still (unfortunately) far enough, the technology has gone very far. For example, the auto cleaning industry.

While your first thoughts may be from Roomba, robotic cleaning is much more advanced and sophisticated than we can imagine.

Read on to learn more about how robots change the way the cleaning industry operates.

How does it work? How Robots Change the Cleaning Industry
Perhaps the most interesting thing about robot cleaning technology is how it works. This technology is largely based on machine learning, a concept that aims to improve how to recognize machine patterns.

Pattern recognition is essential for basic cleaning tasks such as vacuuming and sweeping. In order for the robot to clean the room accurately, first must understand it.

This is where a lot of bumping and banging game. Do not be surprised if your new vacuum walks into the sofa a few times.

A Roomba With A View
If you’re just accustomed to thinking of robotic vacuums, it’s time to broaden your horizons.

Although the technology to suck up the dust is quite fascinating as well. For example, Dyson works on a line of AI-based home cleaners that connect with user’s intelligent home. This new machine uses computer vision to detect the most dirty areas of the user’s home.

These days, there are bots for almost every job you can think of. Boston Dynamics even created a robot dog that can load your plate and pick up trash. How Robots Change the Cleaning Industry

iRobot introduced Braava a few years ago, which was one of the first robot carpet cleaners.

There is also Winbot which gives you the freedom to never wash windows again. No more worries about the stains and odor of harsh cleaning chemicals.

And if you hate page work, be sure to look into LawnBott, which promises to symmetrically cut off your page.

What Does It Mean For Cleaning Industries?
This increased focus on automation can make people feel a little uncomfortable. Especially as more companies seem to work towards an increasingly automated workplace.

While some cleaning work will be lost, most of the industry is safe for now. The technology that most robots use is designed specifically for the home environment.

That means there is still a great need to clean up services in places like offices and hotels.

It also means that much of this work will be replaced by areas such as robotics and computer science. The latter, for example, has seen tremendous growth.

In the past year, the computer science sector featured about 500,000 jobs for 50,000 graduates. While work in this field may not be possible for some people, there are many ways to learn this skill for free.

At the end of the day, robot cleaning technology is great for everyone involved. We’ll see less waste, cleaner houses, and fewer back injuries. So next time you’re stuck removing trash or scrubbing dishes, remember – soon you’ll get help.

Why You Need to Upgrade to Memory Foam Mattress

Your body relies on a deep sleep.

Getting a good night’s rest is essential to maintaining a healthy lifestyle and healthy emotional health. It can also fix or block your everyday functions.

Without sleeping, you are fussy, less productive, and at risk of some serious health problems including heart disease, stroke, and obesity.

Having a good mattress can be the path of life or your downfall when it comes to catching some ZZZ’s stuff.

Memory foam mattress gives you the comfort and support needed to ensure you get the best possible sleep while not sacrificing the alignment of your body.

Why Should Have Memory Foam Matras?
In contrast to spring mattresses, memory foam provides posture support, posture support, and improved blood circulation.

This mattress has a memory foam layer, a support core, and a cover that is covered in the main ‘casing’ cover.

They consist of a visto-elastic foam that allows mattresses to adjust pressure and body temperature. Visto-elasticity is what makes the mattress so durable and able to treat back, neck, and joint pain.

Memory foam mattresses can evenly distribute your weight that increases blood flow, stopping a restless night.

Which Memory Foam Mattress is Right for Me?
The traditional memory foam mattress retains body heat very well so it feels warmer than the spring mattress. However, if you are in a less temperate location or prefer a cooler bed option, you may want to choose a gel foam mattress for not retaining that much heat.

An infusion-containing foam foam also contains a visto-elastic foam, but also holds a gel layer or beads to break down heat absorption.

In addition, if you are looking for a mattress that provides the same level of comfort without chemical makeup, you should consider a plant-based memory foam mattress.

This environmentally friendly mattress is made from natural alternatives of visto-elastic and polyurethane foam. Soybeans, jatropha seeds and bamboo are usually found inside natural memory foam mattresses.

Eco-friendly and gel-infused options are as solid and comfortable as traditional memory foams. Apart from the actual make-up of the mattress, the most striking difference is the heat each has.

Final Thought
Memory foam mattresses are usually slightly more expensive than spring mattresses. However, they last for 8-10 years as opposed to 3-5, so finally, buying a memory foam mattress will save you money in the long run.

Memory foam mattresses can be combined with electric blankets, heated mattress pads, and can even be placed on top of your spring case.

However, I would advise not to use memory foam if there is a broken blade because it is unsafe to hold your weight and your mattress.

Are you sure yet? If not, you should know that most furniture stores allow buyers to test new mattresses. So go out and use this ‘ride’ test! I’ll warn you: once you try the memory foam mattress – you will not look back!

What is Modbus and How Can You Benefit From it

If you’re looking for an easy to use, open serial communication protocol to implement with your electronic industrial devices, then you must have stumbled upon Modbus, at least once or twice.

Curious about what it is and how you can benefit from it? Many companies and developers have grown to love this open communication communication protocol, and use it extensively in programming the electronic industrial devices they work on.

Let’s take a look at what Modbus is, and how you can benefit from it.

What exactly is Modbus?
Modbus was developed in 1979 by Modicon, the company behind the first programmable logic controller. In tech terms, it is a serial communication protocol.

In other words, Modbus is a way for electronic industrial devices communicate with each other. It allows information to be transmitted over serial lines between electronic devices. Devices can request information, as well as supply it.

Devices that request information using Modbus are called Modbus Slaves. Modbus Masters can even write information to Modbus Slaves.

It should be noted that there can be one Master per Modbus network, but there can be up to 247 Slaves. Each Slave has their own unique address.

How much does Modbus cost and how is it used?
When Modbus was created, it was released to the public, making it an open protocol. This means that companies and developers are built into their networks and build into their equipment without paying royalties.

This fact has made Modbus the most commonly used electronic industrial devices are connected. Regardless of the industry, your organization is in, Modbus can be used to help automate network communication.

There are also various versions available from Modbus that are used to address specific needs an organization. For example, Modbus TCP is used for Ethernet, and Modbus RTU and Modbus ASCII for serial lines.

How can Modbus help my company?
Modbus is great for any company within the manufacturing industry – regardless of what you manufacture. Your organization can benefit from Modbus, because it allows quick and efficient communication between devices in a network.

A scenario in which Modbus could be used in transmitting control devices and sending them back to a main control device.

A practical application of this would be an electronic industrial system that measures air pressure and transmits them back to a computer for analysis. Another way that it can be used is connecting a supervisory system to the remote terminal units in a supervisory control and data acquisition system.

If your company has a real need for data collection and transmission to a main computer, or if it actively uses a supervisory control and data acquisition system then Modbus is definitely a serial transmission protocol worth exploring.

Those two scenarios are just a fraction of the possibility that Modbus is used in your company’s network. With Modbus, the possibilities for innovation and simplification are endless.

Live in the Dry Season in the Galapagos

Live in the Dry Season in the Galapagos

Usually, the word “dry season” conjures up arid vision, inadequate. But for the outlying islands of the Galapagos Islands, the dry season is nothing boring.
Unlike some other destinations around the world, the dry moon is actually an ideal time for nature lovers to start a wildlife voyage in the Galapagos. It does not experience a typical tropical climate, and between July and December is actually a time of great activity, migration and breeding. Live in the Dry Season in the Galapagos

What Happens During The Dry Moon?

The archipelago has two distinct seasons: dry and wet. The season here is directly influenced by the cold Humboldt Current, which mixes with warm water from the equatorial currents and causes the rich nutrients (from Humboldt) to rise to the surface. During the dry period of six months, currents are driven toward the island by prevailing trade winds, which have a profound effect on local ecology.

Animal Sea Abundance

With an abundant supply of food, marine life is growing rapidly at this time. Along with the number of fish that can be seen in shallow waters, the population of sharks, octopi, rays and crustaceans swells to a greater proportion. For sea turtles, this is the time of breeding in the prime and December marking the start of their nesting season. Live in the Dry Season in the Galapagos

High Height

The height of various volcanic islands means, even in the dry months, there is significant rainfall in some areas. On the plateau, the drizzle and mist of moist known as Garúa is a constant presence and, while under the conditions at the bottom is quite arid, fertile and tropical highlands. Therefore, large numbers of animals – like the Giant Turtles – migrate to higher ground for food. While this seasonal movement occurs on a smaller scale than Africa’s “big migration”, it is the same principle. To find very active wildlife, most trips to wildlife voyages in the Galapagos at this time of the year will include trips to several island plateaues.

Breeding time

Surprisingly, temperatures are lower during the dry months, and during this cold weather many species choose to breed. It is very common among bird species and, when their young are hatched, large numbers of small fish in the surrounding waters serve as a reliable source of food. Boobies, Frigate and Flightless Cormorants begin their marriage early in the dry season, and their numbers increase as the gliders begin to appear in the following months.

Other species that have a higher profile during this breeding period are the unique Lava lizards, migrant sharks, flamingoes, sea lions, penguins, whales and dolphins.

Dry Moon End

At the end of December, as the Humboldt Current slows and rises in temperature, there is a shift in wildlife activity that is clear as the second season of the archipelago – a wet approach. For those planning a wildlife voyage in the Galapagos, no time in a year is a bad time, but the dry season can be a fun and enjoyable time to visit.

Find Out What is Fashion Marketing So You Can Reduce Competition

The fashion industry is huge, generating $ 1 trillion in gross revenue annually.

Yes, it’s “trillion” with “t.”

So what is fashion marketing? This is the range you need to separate your product from competition and succeed in the world’s harshest retail industry.

Here are some tips to help you get started and gain excellence in the competition.

Have Great Products and Know Your Niche
It all starts here right?

Many people sell underwear, so if you sell underwear, it’s better to have something that sets it apart from the competition.

Better materials A good story. Well suited.

Whatever the product, you need to understand exactly what you are selling and how it fits the competition – so do your research before you develop your marketing plan.

It does not matter if you ask people to “Click Here” to buy grillz or sell winter parka. All successful fashion marketing begins with knowledge of products and research in the marketplace.

That’s the first task of your newly printed marketing team (though it’s just you!).

Social Media Is Your Friend
When looking for sterling examples of what is fashion marketing, look no further than social media.

Facebook. Instagram. Pinterest. Even Snapchat.

The fashion industry leads almost all industries when it comes to experimenting with social media.

After all, social media has become increasingly visual and fashion is nothing but the first picture-industry. Studies have shown that completely one out of three consumers have purchased clothing items after viewing them on Instagram.

If you hate social media, sorry – it’s important you learn to love him or hire someone who does it.

Find Great Influencer in Your Niche
Speaking of people who turn to social media like a proverbial fish to water, influencer marketers have become a big part of what is marketed in fashion by 2017.

What is that?

Simply put, influencers marketing is when a company or brand contracts with someone who has an established and large social media presence in their target niche to promote a product.

This is basically a celebrity endorsement for the 21st century.

How important is it? More than six in 10 fashion companies make influencers as part of their marketing strategy in 2016, with another 21 percent planning to incorporate it in 2017.

Do not Forget Your Land Game
Social media is good to talk about because it can be accessed anywhere, but the soul of fashion marketing is still on the ground.

So go to trade shows, fashion shows, and make connections.

Show off your collection. Do a trunk show. Co-sponsored an event.

The key is preparing your digital marketing game so that when you face the community with the product, the conversation can continue in the digital space with websites, email, social media, and so on.

Land games are an opportunity for people who find you through digital space to gain tactile experience – viewing their products, touching products – as well as opportunities for those who have seen the product engage in ongoing dialogue with the brand before they buy.

What is Marketing Mode? It’s up to you
With so much competition, the most important thing is to stand out. Take a risk.

Some brands do their marketing via e-mail only. Some do great stunts.

Others just stand by their great products, tour the country performing, and rely on word of mouth.

After all, you need a good photo.

A nice picture, however, says a thousand words. And that means dollars.

Ta-Nehisi Coates wants readers to be “haunted” by his work

Ta-Nehisi Coates wants readers to be “haunted” by his work

Author and essayist Ta-Nehisi Coates with correspondent Martha Teichner.
Critically-acclaimed author Ta-Nehisi Coates has earned a huge following, along with several prestigious awards, for his thought-provoking books dealing with race. He does not want people to simply read the books; Martha Teichner in an interview for CBS ‘”Sunday Morning,” to be broadcast November 5.

“I try to write in a way that makes people feel things,” Coates tells Teichner. “I do not want them to read what I’m writing and say, ‘I think that’s right’ and agree with me. I want them to read something and then walk away and be haunted by it.”

Coates’ latest book, “We Were Eight Years in Power: An American Tragedy,” became an instant bestseller. And “Between the World and Me,” a letter to his son about the hazards of being a black male in the US, won the National Book Award in 2015. That same year, he was awarded a so-called MacArthur “genius grant. ”

Coates tells Teichner his initial audience is himself. “Secondly, it’s probably a young African-American kids who came up like me.”

He grew up in Baltimore, surrounded by both violence and books. His father, Paul Coates, a one-time Black Panther, published books by forgotten African-American writers from an office in his basement and also worked as a research librarian at Howard University. Ta-Nehisi Coates went on to study there, and spent a lot of time in the library. Today, his writing is required or recommended reading at least 400 schools and colleges.

“My job is to look out on that world that I write about and be as honest as I possibly can about that world,” he tells Teichner. “If that’s optimistic and uplifting, OK. If it’s not, OK.”

How Does Machine Learning Work?

How does machine learning work?

This may not be one of life’s big questions. But these days the artificial intelligence (AI) community is days.

The idea that you can actually learn. And you might wonder how do this without a brain.

Yes, machines do not have brains. Not like human brains, at least. But they are learning.

So Then How Does Machine Learning Work?
The notion of works might be a little unnerving. Especially if you were raised on sci-fi books and movies.

But machine learning is about as scary as a bobble head.

It’s much more similar to data mining than it is to evil robots taking over the world. In both systems, data is searched in an attempt to find patterns.

The difference is that with data mining, the data is extracted for the sake of human comprehension. Machine learning uses the data to find patterns and then adjusts programs according to actions patterns.

They’re algorithms.

And these machine learning algorithms can be used to either apply what has been learned in the past to new data, or to draw inferences from datasets.

Okay, so let’s put it in simpler terms.

Let’s say that you want to buy the best cotton candy machine on the market. You find what looks like the perfect model.

Then you search a little deeper and eventually land on the reviews for that perfect model. If words like “excellent,” “great” or “awesome fluffability” show up, you can feel confident about your move toward making a purchase.

On the other hand, if words like “bad,” “poor quality” or “caught on fire” keep appearing, you know it’s probably best to move on to a different machine. Or even scrap the idea and buy something less liable to rot out your teeth.

In either case, the reviews help you take action based on the pattern of words that appear in them. The buyers who wrote product reviews will influence other buyers.

And their reviews will have an influence on future purchases. From this, buy buyers of the product.

Machine learning attempts to encode this human decision-making process into usable algorithms.

That’s the simplest answer to how does machine learning work.

It’s important to understand that three conditions must be met before one can apply.

1. There must be a pattern in the input data to arrive at a conclusion.
For example, if we believed that the reviews did not offer any meaning, then they would not help us to make a decision.

For machine learning to solve a problem, the algorithm must have a pattern to infer from.

2. There has to be enough data to apply machine learning to a problem.
If there are no product reviews at all, it will be difficult to arrive at a decision as to whether to buy the product. Right?

3. We, humans, are unable to formulate a mathematical expression that describes the behavior of the problem.
This is the stuff that causes most human brains to implode.

So now machine learning is used to find meaning in the data and perform “learning” to come up with a mathematical approximation that describes the behavior of the problem.

That’s it in a nutshell.

In conclusion, machines are not taking over the world. Not yet.

Barge Type: Know Your Spitzen From Your Clip

For newcomers to barge holidays, all barges may look the same. However, there are many types of ships with striking differences in history and design. This model evolved over 200 years, adapting to changing conditions and technology. In Europe, the barge – ships barges – connecting the English Channel, Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. Here is a brief overview of the most common vessels you might encounter on your barge vacation.
Tjalks and Klippers Barge Type: Know Your Spitzen From Your Clip

This barging tradition can be traced back to the seventeenth century. Originally wind-powered Tjalks were built of wood; In the nineteenth century, ship builders began to consider the possibility of iron and on twentieth century steel properties exploited by this industry. Therefore, the modern version of Tjalk is constructed of iron or steel, yet retains the stern arch of indigenous wood.

Designed for fast-flowing estuaries and rivers in the Netherlands, the tough Klipper is always built of iron or steel. The use of steel leads to a stronger vessel, although this introduces the danger of corrosion. Klipper’s steering sat under a stern round and ridden with wheels. Beurtmotor and Luxemotor

Beurtmotor is used for passengers and cargo and often travels to a reliable schedule, replacing steam-powered steamers. It became even more popular with the introduction of diesel engines because their scheduling was more consistent than ever before. Like other barges, Beurtmotor was built to navigate the shallow waters – anywhere between 3 and about 10 feet of water. However this is not a limitation, as most inland waters in western Europe conform to this requirement.

Luxemotor trailblazing was built in the early 20th century and was the first barge to have its own machine. Driving on Beurtmotor’s success, they are quite luxurious with plenty of space – including kitchens and toilets – as well as a pointy bow that is ideal for more open waters.

Spitz

Spitz has a long and varied history. They were built to the standard of Freycinet imposed by Napoleon during the standardization period, and the ship was first withdrawn by hand (or horse). However, after the Second World War many Belgian Spitz ships were kitted out with tank machines that were often disabled. With some adjustments at the stern to fix the wheel, the Spitz Motor version is designed for canals in France, Belgium and the Netherlands.

European Air Line: Our Fleet

The European Airway fleet includes a barge with lots of history behind them. Vacation barges match the history lover and cruise ship enthusiasts. For example, L’Art de Vivre – the oldest fleet – is an English model and built in the First World War to supply allied forces in the Somme.
